Use Free Find My iPhone on Older iOS Devices
As you learned yesterday, Apple's slick Find My iPhone service is now free -- no more pricey MobileMe subscriptions required.
Alas, only owners of the iPhone 4, iPad, and fourth-gen iPod Touch can take advantage of Apple's generosity. If you have, say, an iPhone 3GS, you're outta luck.
Actually, you're not! As reported by Lifehacker, it's possible to install and use Find My iPhone on older iOS devices. All you need is one of the aforementioned newer devices --even one that doesn't belong to you -- to set up an account.
I won't rehash the step-by-step here, but I will confirm that the method works: I was able to get Find My iPhone up and running on an older iPod Touch. I suppose it's possible Apple will clamp down on this in a future OS update, but for now, all your iOS devices can get in on the remote-recovery goodness.
