U.S. Navy building laser machine gun capability

New laser will be able to counter small surface and air threats BAE Systems

The United States Navy is stepping up its plans to equip machine guns on its ships with directed-energy capabilities. Boeing is now working with BAE Systems, to marry a solid-state, high-energy laser weapon module with BAE's Mk 38 Mod 2 gun system. It will add adjustable levels of laser energy to counter threats such as small boats and UAVs.
