U.S. Air Force Jet Crashes In France

A U.S. Air Force A10 on a training mission crashed Thursday in a forest in eastern France. The pilot aboard the one-seat aircraft was killed.

The A-10 tank killer was on a tactical training mission from a U.S. air base in western Germany, reports CBS News Correspondent Elaine Cobbe.

The jet crashed at 2:45 p.m. (8:45 a.m. EDT) in the Vosges region between Domptail and Saint-Pierremont, near the town of Rambervilliers, just over the border from Germany. There were no other casualties.

"It carried one person on board," said an Air Force statement. "The condition of the pilot is unknown at this time."

The pilot was part of the 81st fighter squadron, based in Spangdahlem. It's unclear what caused the crash.
