U.N.: U.S. Must Stop Detainee Torture
The U.S. must "eradicate" torture of detainees by its personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq and investigate allegations thoroughly, prosecuting any staff found guilty, according to a draft of a report by a U.N. panel obtained Friday by The Associated Press.
"The state party should take firm measures to eradicate all forms of torture and ill treatment of detainees by its law enforcement personnel, civil or military, in Afghanistan and Iraq," said the 15-page report by the U.N. Committee Against Torture, which was presenting its conclusions from a hearing earlier this month into U.S. conduct.
