U.N. ditching Wonder Woman as ambassador Friday amid protests
Wonder Woman’s tenure as a United Nations honorary ambassador is going to be fairly short-lived, as the organization has announced it is ending the campaign Friday, less than two months after her appointment.
The decision to name the long-running DC Comics superhero an honorary ambassador for women’s issues was met with criticism, with some complaining about her sexualized appearance while others felt using a fictional character was a slight against real-life female activists.
A petition protesting the campaign came just shy of its goal of 45,000 signatures. The petition was attributed to concerned U.N. staffers.
“It is alarming that the United Nations would consider using a character with an overtly sexualized image at a time when the headline news in United States and the world is the objectification of women and girls,” the petition read.
Representatives for the U.N. did not elaborate as to why Wonder Woman’s ambassadorship would be coming to such an abrupt end. The character’s first solo feature film, starring Gal Gadot, is due in theaters in June 2017.
