Tyler Clementi Suicide: Parents Consider Lawsuit Against Rutgers University

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS/AP) The parents of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after his gay sexual encounter was allegedly broadcast online by his roommate, are considering suing the school.

Family lawyer Paul Mainardi filed the notice of intent to sue. He says the parents have not decided whether to move ahead with the suit.

The notice says it appears Rutgers failed to implement or enforce policies that would have prevented or deterred such acts.

Rutgers spokesman E.J. Miranda said the university sympathizes with the family but is not responsible for the freshman's death.

Clementi, 18, jumped off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate Dharun Ravi and classmate Molly Wei reportedly live-streamed video of Clementi in a sexual encounter with another man in his dorm room without his knowledge.

Both Ravi and Wei have withdrawn from Rutgers and are facing invasion of privacy charges for spying on Clementi.
