Turn Your PC Into a Wireless Access Point

connection-sharing.jpgA couple days ago we wrote about the CradlePoint CTR-350 Cellular Travel Router, which turns a wireless modem into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. As astute reader kevinkpierce pointed out, Mac users can accomplish more or less the same thing without the extra hardware:

Just share your connection: go to system preferences/sharing/internet and activate the Airport checkbox. You can choose 40 or 128 security, set up passwords, etc.
Great call! For more detailed instructions on this process, check out Lifehacker's guide to sharing your Mac's Internet connection. Windows users can do likewise via Internet Connection Sharing, which is explained here. Of course, these scenarios presume that you've got a machine connected via Ethernet, like you would in, say, a hotel room or office conference room. If one person can get a wired connection, everyone else can hop on via Wi-Fi.
