Tuesday's Election Results At A Glance
Highlights of primary voting Tuesday in eight states:
ALABAMA
GOVERNOR: Incumbent Fob James forced into a June 30 runoff with moderate businessman Winton Blount. Lt. Gov. Don Siegelman beat three rivals for Democratic nomination.
SENATE: Republican incumbent Richard Shelby unopposed; only Democrat was Clayton Suddith, retired ironworker and former Franklin County commissioner.
CALIFORNIA
GOVERNOR: Lt. Gov. Gray Davis won Democratic nomination, beating Rep. Jane Harman and businessman Al Checchi; Attorney General Dan Lungren won Republican nomination against token opposition. Gov. Pete Wilson barred from seeking third term.
SENATE: Incumbent Barbara Boxer wins Democratic nomination against token opposition. On Republican side, state Treasurer Matt Fong defeated Darrell Issa.
PROPOSITIONS: Proposition 227 passes; will dismantle most bilingual education programs. Proposition 226 defeated; would require unions to get members' permission before using any portion of dues for political activity.
OAKLAND MAYOR: Former Gov. Jerry Brown led a crowded field, and obtained a majority of the vote needed to avoid a runoff.
CONGRESS: Republican Rep. Jay Kim, seeking nomination for fourth term despite conviction for accepting illegal campaign contributions, lost to state Assemblyman Gary Miller. Kim is the first congressman to lose a primary this year.
IOWA
GOVERNOR: Former Rep. Jim Ross Lightfoot won Republican nomination; state Sen. Tom Vilsack won Democratic nomination. Republican Gov. Terry Branstad retiring after four terms.
NEW JERSEY
CONGRESS: Rep. Marge Roukema, the longest-serving woman in the House, beat Assemblyman Scott Garrett for the Republican nomination; she faces Democrat Mike Schneider, a former television news reporter.
Scientist Rush Holt beat attorney Carl Mayer for the Democratic nomination and the right to face first-term Republican Rep. Mike Pappas.
NEW MEXICO
GOVERNOR: Republican incumbent Gary E. Johnson unopposed for nomination. Former Albuquerque Mayor Martin J. Chavez won Democratic nomination.
SOUTH DAKOTA
SENATE: Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle had no primary opposition; lawyer Ron Schmidt beat two rivals for Republican nomination.
MISSISSIPPI also had congressional primaries; MONTANA had primary races for state and local offices only.
