Top wedding dress trends: "Gatsby" glamour and more

Bridal fashion went from the aisle to the runway when the industry's top designers descended on New York last month to unveil (no pun intended) their Spring/Summer 2014 collections.

Vintage glamour was one of the trends that took center stage, with column gowns and dramatic beading harkening back to "The Great Gatsby" era.

"Columns were really prominent this season. And I think that's a nod to the whole 'Great Gatsby' craze that everyone's in now," said Jennie Ma, fashion editor at TheKnot.com. "So really streamlined silhouettes, but heavily beaded with really beautiful art-deco details."

Beading wasn't the only embellishment spotted on the runway -- designers also presented gowns with metallic accents, lace appliques and pearls, which Ma said give a "glossy" look that is subtler than rhinestones or sequins.

Another major trend: beautiful backs that will wow the groom and guests alike.

"It was really nice because you saw this really classic, beautiful dress come down the runway and once the model passed you, you saw the most incredible back ever -- whether it was completely jeweled or embellished or a sheer lace back or a totally open back with a really pretty cowl," Ma described.

"Reception dresses" also made their way down the runway, with designers like Reem Acra and Monique Lhuillier showing shorter-length dresses (think at-the-knee or higher) that brides could choose a second dress for after their ceremony.

Color was prominent on the catwalk as well. Ma noted that many designers went beyond the standard white, champagne and ivory. There were glimpses of blush (like Oscar de la Renta did, above), along with pale, icy blue, taupe and even black, which Vera Wang used in her gowns and the long, opera-length gloves worn by many of her models.

Other major trends spotted in these latest bridal collections: Illusion necklines, capes (both short and floor-grazing), tiered skirts and lots of lace.
