Olympic hopeful crushed to death by tank in Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. - A nationally ranked boxer is dead after an industrial accident in which a 6-ton tank shifted unexpectedly and fell on him while he was sandblasting it.

Police said 22-year-old Tony Losey was working as a subcontractor at a steel plate fabricating company when the tank fell onto him Tuesday afternoon.

Losey also was a well-known amateur boxer who planned to pursue an Olympic spot in 2016. As of July, USA Boxing had ranked Losey third nationally in its 152-pound weight class.

Losey's boxing coach, Lewis Hernandez, told CBS affiliate KWCH in Wichita he thought of Losey as a son.

"He's an excellent young man, I mean a great young man. Real... real humble," said Hernandez, adding that Losey was never too busy to help someone out.

"He'd go help another kid, you know? See a beginner doing something wrong, he'd go over there and correct them and he'd stick with them, whether it took away from his training time or not," Hernandez said.

Losey was planning a wedding and raising two daughters, according to Hernandez.

Police Sgt. John Ryan said it's rare for the tanks, which fall several times a year, to injure workers because most of the time people are able to get out of the way.
