Tony Hawks TV Show, Video Game
Tony Hawk is the ultimate skateboarder. People call him "the Michael Jordan" of his sport.
He's famous for his many tricks, including the "900": 2 1/2 turns in the air, which he was the first to perform in competition.
On The Early Show plaza Thursday, Hawke filled in Dave Price on his latest projects, a TV show and a video game.
He told Price he never imagined skateboarding would lead him where it has. "When I started, the best you could hope for was to get your picture in a magazine, and maybe get some free equipment, so I never thought it would be a career," he said. "I was just doing it through high school, and then thought I'd have to move to something else."
Of course, it has led Hawk to fame and riches.
Asked if he'd call it a combination of sport and artistry, like dancing in the air with rolling wheels under you, Hawk replied, "It's very subjective and very much of an art form in that you do it in your own style and they have competitions. So, it's a sport in that you get judged for what you're doing, so it's however you want it to be."
Hawk's new effort on the Fuse Network takes him to parks put together by the Tony Hawk Foundation. He just shows up randomly.
"It's called "The Secret Skateboard Tour," Hawk explained. "We take a group of pros, we show up unannounced, and we document the whole thing, from the kids' reactions when we get there to the riding to — by the time we leave, there's like 500 people there."
Hawk calls his new video game, "Project 8," his best yet. He says it combines "all the best stuff from our previous games, but we've got all new motion-capture of all the riders, so they actually skate the way you see them in real life, and we've got a new trick scheme. It's our best effort." The game comes in versions for all popular video systems.
