Police Chief Clay McKinney says the mother had the toddler and two older children with her Tuesday when she dropped her husband off at work, then drove home. She and her two other children went into the residence.

The mother later realized she left her toddler in the car, found him and tried to resuscitate him. She drove the boy to a hospital, where he was declared dead. An autopsy was ordered.

Child Protective Services took custody of her other two children.

The National Weather Service says the temperature hit 101 degrees Tuesday afternoon in Pecos.
