NYC jewelry store cancels holiday display unveiling event because of "post-election activity"
NEW YORK -- Tiffany & Co. canceled the unveiling event for its holiday display that transforms its 5th Avenue storefront for the season. But the designer jewelry giant’s store will still be decorated for the holidays.
The company made the announcement Wednesday, citing security concerns around the 57th Street location in light of “post-election activity” in the area.
“We remain open for business via our 57th Street entrance, and look forward to welcoming customers to experience the magic of our holiday windows, as well as to see our illuminated façade, on display throughout the season,” a spokesperson for Tiffany & Co. said.
The bustling Midtown section of Manhattan was taken over by protesters in the days following the presidential election, with large-scale demonstrations overtaking walkways outside nearby Trump Tower for hours at a time.
Security concerns were also raised after a new ISIS magazine called the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade an “excellent target” for vehicle attacks similar to the deadly Bastille Day incident in Nice, France.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference Wednesday that city officials would address post-election security concerns later this week, CBS New York reports.
Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly said Tiffany & Co. canceled its holiday display for this year. The company only canceled the unveiling event for its holiday display.
