This Week: By The Numbers

The week as a whole was more than the sums of its parts. So, let's break it all down by the numbers.

Many Americans took a break on Wednesday to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks, food and friends. And celebrities were no exception. Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and a too many stars to count turned up for soirees by the beach.

Earlier in the week, Lohan finally reached the legal drinking age when she turned 21 on Monday. The starlet, who is still receiving extended care in rehab, celebrated the big day at a private house with family and friends. She told TMZ it was her "first sober birthday ever."

After 12 weeks apart, Prince William and his ex, Kate Middleton, are apparently a couple once again. The report in The Sun newspaper came just five days after Middleton attended the prince's concert in London, according to The Associated Press.

After three years of marriage, author Salman Rushdie and his wife, "Top Chef" host Padma Lakshmi, are dividing their assets after filing for divorce. The couple had been together a total of eight years.

Even a 23-day stint in jail can't subtract from Paris Hilton's celebrity. An empty can of organic dog food found in Hilton's trash was sold this week for an alarming $305 on eBay, The Associated Press reported. What's worse is that someone also plunked down $305 for a used toothbrush.

Although its two stars each received Tonys last month, the Broadway musical "Grey Gardens" will close July 29 after 307 performances. A producer told The Associated Press that the decision came as the show "faced an uphill challenge during the summer months."

Rocker Pete Doherty pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a drug charge. The Babyshambles front man — who has been in court too many times to count — reportedly admitted to possessing quantities of crack cocaine, heroin, cannabis and ketamine. And his on-again, off-again relationship with model Kate Moss appears to have broken off one more time. News reports say his belongings were seen being loaded into a van outside Kate's St John's Wood home Thursday.

More than four months after she attacked a car with an umbrella in a fit of rage, Britney Spears came clean about why she did it. In a message posted on her Web site Thursday, Spears said she was doing a bit of method acting in preparation for a movie role.

"I take all my rolls (sic) very seriously and got a little carried away. Unfortunately I didn't get the part," she wrote. For the record, she has had five TV and movie roles.

By week's end sights were set on Live Earth, the 24-hour, seven-continent succession of concerts to begin on Saturday. Former vice president Al Gore hopes the "global affair" featuring more than 100 performers will draw attention to his global warming crusade.
