1990

UNLV sets an NCAA Championship scoring record in dismantling Duke, 103-73, in the National Final at Denver. Coach Jerry Tarkanian, the college game's winningest coach, finally wins his first national crown. For Duke, however, it marks the eighth time the Blue Devils have been to the Final Four and the ei ghth time they have come away without the trophy. Anderson Hunt leads the way for UNLV, scoring 29 points for the Runnin' Rebels, who shoot 62 percent from the floor. Hunt is named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

1988

The Cinderella season continues for Kansas as the Jayhawks advance to the National Final with a 66-59 win over Duke at Kansas City. The Jayhawks jump out to a 14-0 lead and never look back as they avenge a 1986 Final Four loss to the Blue Devils. Danny Manning scores 25 points and blocks a Final Four record six shots (In 1996, Marcus Camby ties the record).

1984

Georgetown's Patrick Ewing and Houston's Akeem Olajuwon are pitted in the battle of t he big men for the national title at Seattle. Neither center endsup as a factor as Ewing scores just 10 and Olajuwon 15. Georgetown prevails in the game, 84-75, as five Hoyas register double figures, led by Reggie Williams' 19. Ewing, however, is named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

1983

Hugh Durham becomes the sixth coach to lead two different schools to the Final Four. However, Durham's Georgia Bulldogs, after upsetting St. John's and North Carolina, are defeated by North Carolina State, 67-60, in the National Semifinal at Albuquerque. Durham's 1972 Florida State team upset Minnesota, Kentucky and North Carolina but lost in the title game to UCLA, 81-76.

1983

Houston and Louisville play one of the most electrifying games in NCAA Tournament history as Houston's "Phi Slama Jama" outdunks Louisville, 94-81, in a National Semifinal at Albuquerque. The Cougars advance to make their first of two straight championship game appearances on the merits of Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler, who each score 21 points.
