This Day In Tournament History

March 16

1990

Northern Iowa coach Eldon Miller becomes the most recent coach to lead three different schools--Western Michigan and Ohio State are the others--to the NCAA Tournament. His Panthers, the 14th-seed in the Southeast Region, shock Missouri, 74-71, in a first round game at Richmond, Va. Jason Reese leads the way for Northern Iowa with 18 points and 15 rebounds but it is Maurice Newby who throws in the game-winning three-pointer in the closing seconds. However, the season ends for Northern Iowa two days later with an 81-78 loss to Minnesota.

1990

High-scoring Loyola Marymount plays its first game since the death of Hank Gathers on March 4. The Lions, led by Bo Kimble's West Region record-tying 45 points, crush New Mexico State, 111-92, in a West Region First Round game at Long Beach, Calif. As a tribute to his departed friend and teammate, Kimble shoots and makes his first free-throw of the game left-handed.

1989

Middle Tennessee State scores the final 21 points of the game to upset Florida State, 97-83, in a Southeast Region First Round game at Nashville. Florida State leads, 83-76, with 5:00 to play but the Buccaneers score the final 21 points of the game. Freshman Mike Buck scores 15 straight points during the run. Buck is 7-for-7 from the field, six of those three-pointers.

1989

Top-seeded Oklahoma survives a scare from little East Tennessee State, 72-71, in a Southeast Region First Round game at Nashville. Mookie Blaylock's baseline drive with 1:21 left gives the Sooners a lead they never relinquish. East Tennessee State, which led most of the game, misses two potential game-winning shots in the closing moments.

1989

Siena stuns Stanford, 80-78, in an East Region First Round game at Greensboro. The Cardinal, making its first appearance since its 1942 national championship season, are handed their first NCAA Tournament loss ever. The game is tied at the half, but Siena goes on a 21-2 run to take a

14-point lead before Stanford comes back. Marc "Showbiz" Brown, the Siena floor leader, misses twice in 1-and-1 situations late in the game, but finally ices it with a pair of free-throws with 0:03 to play.

1986

Navy upsets Syracuse at the Carrier Dome in an East Region Second game. Led by David Robinson, the seventh-seeded Midshipmen easily defeat the second-seeded Orangemen, 97-85. Robinson has 35 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks and holds Syracuse's Rony Seikaly to four points, four rebounds. In toppling Syracuse, Navy advances to a regional final for

the first time since 1954.
