"The Vow": What the critics are saying

Channing Tatum, Rachel McAdams in 2012's "The Vow" Sony Pictures

(CBS) "The Vow" stars two red hot actors: Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams. But critics are lukewarm to ice cold on the film, which opens today.

Inspired by a true story, "The Vow," follows Chicago residents and newlyweds Leo and Paige, as their world is turned upside down after Paige suffers a car accident and ends up in a coma. She struggles with severe brain trauma and forgets even meeting her husband. The movie chronicles the ups and downs of their relationship, as Leo tries to win Paige's heart back.

Despite the heartwarming premise, film review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, gave it a sour score of 32 percent.

Some headlines are trashing the romance film, with New York magazine reporting it "lacks chemistry," and the New Jersey Star-Ledger telling readers it's a "film to forget." The Boston Herald's take? "Vow to skip this." Ouch.

Here's a look at a few review excerpts for "The Vow":

New York Times: "'The Vow' is designed for comfort, not shock. But even by the standards of commercial melodrama it's a pretty weak brew ... When they are on the screen together here, there is enough physical charm and emotional warmth to distract from the threadbare setting and the paper-thin plot. But those defects ultimately get in the way of the stars and leave you wondering: Is this a romance about neurological impairment or a neurologically impaired romance?"

Los Angeles Times: "Despite the sweet story -- lovely couple, car wreck, brain injury, she forgets him, he loves her anyway -- and the beautiful scenery -- cool converted warehouse spaces, snowy Chicago streets, Lake Michigan in the moonlight, and of course Tatum and McAdams -- this is a movie that leaves you wanting more. To care more, to cry more, to love more."

USA Today: "It may appeal to the most rabid fans of tearjerk romances like 'The Notebook,' but it's a hard-to-swallow, maudlin tale. Nearly every move feels calculated to wring tears or dopey grins, beginning with the choice of the starring couple. Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams are blessed with substantial swoon-inducing attributes but seem to be going through the motions."
