The Romneys Have Landed

From CBS News' Marc Lieberman:

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - Mitt Romney touched down in Portsmouth, New Hampshire shortly after 3 a.m., just hours after a stinging defeat in the Iowa caucuses.

Romney and his wife Ann walked down the steps of their chartered JetBlue airplane onto an icy tarmac. They were greeted by a phalanx of photographers who, moments before, had been rounded up by staffers eager to facilitate the photo op.

As soon as the Romneys walked off the plane, a hangar door opened to reveal more than a hundred supporters cheering him on. Romney took the stage with his wife and sons Tagg and Josh along with their wives.

Romney often talked of bringing change to Washington on the stump in Iowa but, in his first remarks here, touched on a slightly modified theme: that Washington needs new people in power not just the same ones with different titles. It was a not so subtle dig at his rival Senator John McCain who has recently taken the lead from Romney in the polls here. As for the results in Iowa, he said it was only the first inning of a fifty inning game.

New Hampshire has always been a key part of the Romney strategy to win early and fuel momentum that would carry him through to bigger states where he is not as well known as some of his competitors. But that strategy suffered a blow with the loss in Iowa. Romney had poured millions into a sophisticated campaign organization and thousands of TV ads. Having suffered defeat in Iowa, New Hampshire seems more crucial than ever if the Romney campaign's so called "kindling strategy" is to catch fire.

Before taking off from Iowa, Romney boarded his plane to cheers from staff and supporters seated in the front of the cabin. He appeared uncharacteristically unkempt, at least for Romney - no tie, his trademark white shirt rumpled a bit and his hair ever so slightly out of place.
