The Right Notes For Survivor

Survivor spin-offs are multiplying as everyone competes for the attention - and dollars - of the viewers who tune in each week for the game show's drama, spills, and thrills.

The latest is a CD featuring original music from the hit TV show. Executive producer Mark Burnett tells VH1's Rebecca Rankin that he is currently finalizing plans for the release. No date has yet been set.

Russ Landau, one of those who composed the Survivor themes says the music "helps tell the story, music helps indicate what the people on the island are feeling."

Landau describes the show as "sort of like Lord of the Flies meets The Real World."

Another composer for the CBS show, David Vanacore, says, "Sometimes, too, when the emotion isn't there, but they want it to be there, we can add to it. The music can help take it over the edge to pull out the tear."

The inspiration for the tribal sounds came from a most unlikely source.

"Russ played me some Russian choir music,"Burnett relates, "and that music is the underlying vocals for ancient voices. "

Music for the upcoming Survivor to be shot in the land down under will have an Australian flair. The same theme music will be used but it may include a conch shell, of the Australian digereedoo sound of the aborigines.
