The Fray's NCAA national anthem: What did you think?
(CBS News) The Fray's national anthem performance during Monday night's NCAA men's basketball national championship left some viewers scratching their heads.
The quartet's "Star-Spangled Banner" rendition came before the opening tip-off between the Kansas Jayhawks and Kentucky Wildcats.
Backed by two acoustic guitars, a drum and a tambourine, singer Isaac Slade gave quite a different version of the song than we're used to hearing. It's a move that left viewers divided, resulting in some online criticism, too. The Houston Chronicle called the performance "dreadful," while the Washington Post described it as "a little weird."
Asking the pop-rock band, known for its 2006 singles "Over My Head (Cable Car)" and "How to Save a Life," to sing the national anthem is a little unconventional in the first place.
So far, the Denver-based band doesn't seem to mind the mixed critical reaction, even linking to one of the reviews on its Twitter page:
Lead guitarist Dave Welsh laughed off the critics on Twitter:
What did you think about The Fray's national anthem?
