NEW YORK (CBS) The conspiratorial sci-fi thriller "The Event" made its series premiere on Monday night In an episode entitled "I Haven't Told You Everything.".

Pictures: TV's New Fall Shows

Directed by Jeffrey Reiner, the episode focused on the main character Sean Walker (played by Jason Ritter), an average man who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his fiancee Leila and unwittingly exposes the biggest cover-up in U.S. history.

The series premiere also introduces the characters President Elias Martinez (played Blair Underwood) and Sophia Maguire (played by Laura Innes) who is the leader of a mysterious group of detainees.

Early reaction to the show has been mixed. Some critics say the fast-paced plot is too imitative of shows like "Lost" and "24," and doesn't have a compelling, unique identity of its own to captivate viewers. Others say  it has the potential to be a deeply-engrossing hit.

The futures of the characters are all on a track leading up to a global conspiracy that could ultimately change the fate of mankind.

In the closing moments of the show, a potentially key character in "The Event" tells President Martinez "I haven't told you everything."

Is that "everything" worth watching for in the long run?
