"The Cabin in the Woods" brings horror and comedy to the big screen

(CBS News) Cult horror fans are already clamoring for Friday's release of "The Cabin in the Woods," the new film from director Drew Goddard and screenwriter Joss Whedon, who was behind the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series.

The upcoming movie centers around five college friends, who take a weekend trip to a remote cabin in the woods, where they end up getting more than they bargained for.

It features "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly of "iGirl," actor Richard Jenkins, actress Anna Hutchison and Bradley Whitford, who starred on "The West Wing."

The horror film has been getting some positive reviews from critics, with Variety noting, "Not since 'Scream' has a horror movie subverted the expectations that accompany the genre to such wicked effect."

New York magazine chimes in, "Is it scary? Not especially. But there are enough gory surprises around every bend to keep you laughing/screaming/cringing."

"The Cabin in the Woods" has a 93 percent rating on movie review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes.
