The Best Flat Panel Display

See it and you'll want one. Silicon Graphics has introduced a new flat panel display that draws a Wow! from everyone who sees it. It has a unique wide format, kind of like a movie screen with a resolution of 1600 by 1024. What that means is that pictures look photographs and text looks sharp. Even when you're looking at two pages at a time. Silicon Graphics has teamed with Number Nine Visual Technology to bundle the display with a new digital graphics card that will work with Windows and soon the Mac and bring it to the consumer market. Joshua Larson-Mogal, a senior manager with Silicon Graphics, says flat panel LCD displays, are becoming a popular alternative to those big, heavy traditional monitors...

"There are a lot of different computers that are coming out with LCD displays, but the image quality just hasn't been there. And so what we've come out with is an ultra-high resolution, wide format, kind of like HDTV, display that has light table quality."

The futuristic design is eye-catching too. So is the price, at about 28 hundred dollars, including the video card. But take heart. The price will eventually work its way down...

"We've seen dramatic price drops in flat panel technology. That's why that's brought this to where we are today. This type of display probably would have cost as much as seven, eight thousand dollars just a year ago."

It will fit into that budget one of these days.
