"The Amazing Race": Bagpipes and haggis in Scotland
It was on to Edinburgh, Scotland, this week for the five remaining teams on "The Amazing Race."
The drama began immediately with a fight for flights at the airport in Berlin, where last week's non-elimination episode took place. Newlyweds Max and Katie researched flights on the Internet and found one that landed in Edinburgh at 10:40 a.m. YouTube hosts Joey and Meaghan and their alliance partners, roller derby moms Beth and Mona, get tickets on a different flight that arrives at 1 p.m.
At first, it looks like hockey brothers Bates and Anthony and country singers Caroline and Jennifer will be getting in at 4 p.m., but they managed to get themselves on the 10:40 flight. Max and Katie, confident they were flying alone, did not look pleased to see the other teams.
Once in Edinburgh, teams traveled to Gosford House, where they were met by members of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. At this Roadblock, one member of each team had to pick an instructor to teach him or her to play a note on the bagpipes (while wearing a kilt, of course). That team member then had to hold a note on the bagpipes for two minutes while walking around the manor with other members of the regiment.
"You have to keep a steady pressure in order to keep a steady tone," Max explains of playing the bagpipes. He made quick work of it, and so does Bates, but it takes Caroline seven tries and some frustrated tears before she and her teammate can move on.
Next, teams must search the fireplaces at Craigmillar Castle for their next clue, which leads them to a Detour: "Tasty Puddin'" (making haggis -- stuffing organs and spices into an ox's intestine -- and tasting the dish once they've made four portions) or "Whiskey Rollin'" (rolling eight heavy barrels of whiskey up a hill).
Bates and Anthony go for the barrels, while the newlyweds and country singers opt to make (and eat) some haggis. Teams are then sent to Duddingston Kirk, where they find their next clue and the U-Turn board. The hockey brothers arrive first and U-Turn Joey and Meaghan, and Max and Katie do the same to Mona and Beth.
Max and Katie arrive at the Pit Stop first, winning $10,000 each. Bates and Anthony, having gotten lost while driving, come in second, and Caroline and Jennifer arrive third.
Meanwhile, those two teams are neck-and-neck at the back of the pack, and Mona and Beth still have to complete their Speed Bump -- playing "skittles," a Scottish version of bowling. They have to knock down all 10 pins using a ball with no holes. Once they finish, it's back to the race.
Both teams decide to do the haggis task and, after discovering they've been U-Turned, roll the whiskey barrels as well. In the end, Mona and Beth beat them to the Pit Stop and host Phil Keoghan informs Joey and Meaghan that they have been eliminated from the race.
