Texas jailer smuggled hacksaw blades in tacos, gave them to murder suspect

Alfred Casas in a Bexar County, Texas court, Wednesday, July 27, 2011 KENS

(CBS/AP) SAN ANTONIO - A former South Texas jailer who smuggled tacos stuffed with hacksaw blades to a murder suspect awaiting trial has been convicted of bribery for the scheme.

Alfred Casas was convicted by a jury Tuesday of two counts of accepting bribes and one count of providing an implement for escape in the failed December 2009 plot.

Prosecutors say Casas, who has back trouble, received prescription drugs in exchange for smuggling the blades to Jacob Keller. The blades were found during a random search of cells.

Casas faces up to 20 years in prison in a penalty phase that began Wednesday.

In January, Keller pleaded guilty to an April 2009 double slaying. He's been sentenced to 21 years in prison.
