Tether Your iPhone to Your Notebook

iphone22.jpgTethering is the process of connecting your cell phone -- usually via cable or Bluetooth -- to your notebook so that it (the phone) can serve as a wireless modem. Lots of phones can do this (I've had great success with my Verizon LG enV), but the iPhone isn't one of them.

It is now.

Some creative developer types figured out how to tether the iPhone using an ad-hoc Wi-Fi network. That means you'll be able to enjoy wireless Internet access on your Windows or Mac notebook anywhere there's an AT&T EDGE signal. That's assuming, however, you're fairly tech-savvy, able to comfortably delve into network settings and set up proxy servers. The instructions are fairly clear, but definitely not for the faint of heart. What's more, tethering your iPhone could represent a violation of AT&T's terms of service, so do it at your own risk. Then let us know how it goes.
