Tennessee Snatches Sweet Win from Ohio St

Brian Williams scored on a tip-in with 32 seconds left, Bobby Maze converted a pair of free throws and J.P. Prince blocked Evan Turner's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer, leading Tennessee to a 76-73 victory over Ohio State in the Midwest Regional semifinals Friday night.

It's the first trip to the Elite Eight in school history for the sixth-seeded Volunteers.

Turner, a leading contender for national player of the year honors, was a one-man scoring machine in the second half, accounting for all but three of Ohio State's baskets. But it's 5-on-5, not 1-on-5, and the second-seeded Buckeyes are going home.

Michigan State Holds Off Northern Iowa 59-52

Durrell Summers scored 19 points and Korie Lucious hit a whirling turnaround jumper with 95 seconds left, helping fifth-seeded Michigan State survive a mid-major scare with a 59-52 win over pesky Northern Iowa in the Midwest Regional semifinals.

Michigan State (27-8) needed a half to get used to Northern Iowa's grinding style and held the Panthers to 10 free throws over the final 10:22 to send the heroes of the Heartland home empty-handed.

Northern Iowa (30-5) knocked off one March monster but couldn't make it two straight, unable to contain the athletic Spartans for an entire game after stunning top-seeded Kansas in the second round.

Lucious hit his acrobatic shot, then Michigan State held and Chris Allen scored on a putback with 31 seconds left to put the Spartans up 57-51 and into Sunday's regional final against Tennessee.

Duke Beats Purdue 70-57, Ends Elite Eight Drought

Kyle Singler scored 24 points and Jon Scheyer added 18, snapping out of a shooting slump just in time to help top-seeded Duke advance to the round of eight for the first time since 2004 with a 70-57 win over Purdue.

Scheyer, Duke's leading scorer, was 5-for-18 from the field in Duke's first two NCAA tournament games. He went 5-for-9 in the second half after missing his first six shots and also went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Nolan Smith scored 15 points and Brian Zoubek grabbed 14 rebounds for the Blue Devils (32-5), who will face third-seeded Baylor in Sunday's South regional final.

JaJuan Johnson scored 23 points and E'Twaun Moore added 18 for the fourth-seeded Boilermakers (29-6).

The absence of injured do-everything forward Robbie Hummel finally caught up with Purdue. He tore his right ACL in late February.

Baylor Routs Saint Mary's 72-49

Baylor knocked off 10th-seeded Saint Mary's 72-49 behind 28 points from LaceDarius Dunn and an exemplary all-around effort from Tweety Carter.

Coach Scott Drew, the man behind the Baylor reclamation project, couldn't help but smile in the closing minutes as the Bears pushed their school record for wins in a season to 28.

The win in the South Regional semifinal eliminated tournament darling Omar Samhan and Saint Mary's, the tiny school from Moraga, Calif., that showed last week it could play with the big boys.

Samhan finished with 15 points and Ben Allen had 16 points for the Gaels.
