Teen's Five-Week Hiccups Bout Is Over

A 15-year-old girl who had the hiccups for more than five weeks finally has some relief.

After trying plenty of remedies and attracting national attention, Jennifer Mee said her hiccups suddenly stopped around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

No one is certain exactly why she was able to breathe freely again. This week, she went to an infectious disease specialist, a neurologist, a chiropractor, a hypnotist and an acupuncturist. She also tried a patented device designed to stop hiccups.

Early Thursday, Jennifer said she felt a little sick.

"Right now, my nose is burning and my throat hurts," she told the St. Petersburg Times. But she said she felt a lot better than she has in weeks.

Jennifer's mother called the newspaper two weeks ago to try to find help for her daughter, who started hiccupping Jan. 23. That led to national publicity, which included an interview on NBC's "Today" show.
