Teen Brings Home the Bacon, Buys House

Nineteen-year-old Lindsay Binegar has spent the last 15 years showing pigs - and made 40,000 dollars doing it.

She just broke her piggy bank and bought a house in Greenfield, Ohio, and shared her financial savviness with Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

Binegar started showing pigs at age 4 and has been in around 40 shows. While that is unique enough, she has remarkably bought a house - in full - the only real splurge she has ever used her winnings on.

She admits that five years ago she used her $300 earnings and bought a purse and went on a shopping spree.

"I made money with hogs - market hogs - I've shown my whole life," she said. "When I was 9, I got into 4H and showing hogs at state, national, and county fairs.

So, how does showing hogs work?

According to Binegar, it's a six-month process of just raising them and then when you get them at the end of May, you begin to bring them to shows.

"With our hogs, they get baths every night, clean their pens, make sure they have clean pens, and just make sure they're being all around taken care of," she explained. "When they go to the fair, you show in a class of 12, and then go into a final drive - you're very lucky if you make it there - and the judge determines how healthy it looks and sees if you're the winner!"

Binegar's humble father, who came from nothing, inspired her to save her money through the years.

"He's very good with his money," she said.

Binegar rents out the house to her great aunt and uncle for $450/month. She lives with her parents and attends Ohio University of Chillicoche where she is majoring in early childhood education.

So fiancially sound, Binegar might as well be a finance major - she's bringing in rental income while at the same time having a significant investment at such a young age.

"The opportunity came up and I was all for it," she said.
