Sword-wielding man shot dead during fight with Jacksonville police

Jacksonville, Fla. subdivision where police shot and killed a man with a sword, Tuesday, March 29, 2011 WTEV
(CBS/WTEV) JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Jacksonville neighborhood was on lockdown as authorities investigate the shooting death of a man with a sword who fought with police.

According to the Sheriff's Office, residents reported seeing a man wearing a trench coat walking around their Oceanway neighborhood waving a sword, CBS affiliate WTEV reported.

An off duty officer who happened to be in the area responded, and the two men began to struggle. A neighbor stepped in to help the officer but the struggle continued, the station reported. When a second officer showed up to help, police say the suspect was still fighting.

Officers used a taser on the man, but police say that it slowed him down, but didn't stop him. He was inside of a sheriff's patrol car when he apparently pulled out the sword, WTEV reported. It's not clear how he got into the car.

Officers reportedly fired their guns when he pulled out the sword. Bullets were fired through the windshield of the police cruiser and through the car door. Director Dwain Senterfitt said about a dozen rounds were fired, and the suspect, who has not been identified, was killed.

The two officers and the neighbor who fought with the man had minor injuries, WTEV reported.

People in the neighborhood were being kept out until the sheriff's investigation is complete.
