Sunshine, Happiness Rule The Day
Democratic and Republican leaders in the House pledged to work with each other following a rare joint meeting (and photo op) to discuss (very) broad outlines for an economic stimulus package.
Both sides are eager to craft a bipartisan package of small tax rebates to spur short-term economic growth. Or, to quote the Democrats' new motto: "Timely, targeted and temporary."
The package could also include investment incentives for small business and limited social service spending for the lowest income families. Both sides have kept the parameters very broad to maintain future negotiations. But neither wants the other to get greedy. (Democrats, for example won't accept an extension of President Bush's tax cuts, while Republican reject "new taxes or wasteful spending.")
