Summer Hair Dos: Short And Chic

Every summer, as the temperatures heat up, women start to chop off their hair. And although short cuts are chic this summer, The Early Show's stylist David Evangelista, has some advice on what may or may not be flattering for you.

First, know your face shape - the outline of your face - and the size and shape of your forehead in relation to your cheekbones, jawline and chin.

Oval: Slightly narrower at the jawline than the temples, with a gently rounded hairline. The oval shaped face is nicely balanced and in proportion. Most any hairstyle - short, medium, long - works well for an oval face.

Round: A full and circular face, which is about as long as it is wide, with a round chin and hairline. You can narrow a round face by keeping hair sleek at the sides and lengthen the face with lots of volume on top.

Oblong: Longer than it is wide, often with a high forehead, and long, well-defined chin. Short- or medium-length hair will shorten the look of an oblong shaped face, and layers will help soften straight lines. Adding width by giving fullness to the sides will also balance the look of a long and slender face.

Heart (Inverted Triangle): Wide at the cheekbones and forehead, narrowing at the jaw line, reaching a defined pointy chin. Styles that are fuller around the ends will widen the appearance of the chin and jawbone, making the face appear proportioned. Chin-length bobs are ideal, creating a balanced look by giving fullness where it is needed.

Triangular: It's the reverse of the heart-shaped with a dominant jawline, and narrowing at the cheek bone and temples. Shorter hair balances the prominent jaw line. Wedges and shags are best. Wear styles with fullness and/or layers through the upper part of the face to achieve a balanced look.

Square: Face is as wide as it is long with a strong, square jaw line and often an equally square hairline. Short- to medium-length hair works best for square faces, especially layers or wispy looks that help soften the edges around the face.

Diamond: Widest at the cheekbones with a narrow forehead and jaw line of approximately equal widths. To offset angles, keep sides close to the face and give height and fullness to the crown.
