Stray Bullet Kills 2-Year-Old Boy
A two-year-old boy out for a ride with his family on Easter Sunday was shot and killed when a stray bullet pierced their minivan.
New York City police said the incident occurred about 2 p.m. Sunday when two groups of men began arguing in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx and one of the men pulled out a gun and started shooting.
A bullet tore through the sliding door of the family's van, striking David Pacheco Jr. in the chest. The little boy, dressed in his Easter finest, was strapped into a car seat, the New York Times reported. Several other children in the minivan were unharmed.
The boy's mother, Joanne Sanabria, 28, drove about a block before realizing her child had been shot. She slid open the van door and began screaming as she removed the child,
"The baby looked like a rag doll," eyewitness Jeffrey Harkless told the Times.
Angel Cruz, an emergency medical technician who stopped to help, desperately tried to revive the boy.
"The loss of blood was massive," Cruz told the Times. "I knew he was in bad shape."
Rather than wait for an ambulance, Cruz flagged down a cab and took the boy to a nearby hospital. Cruz worked on the little boy in the cab, but the child died before they reached the hospital.
Joanne Sanabria said son David was "an angel."
Grieving family and friends said David was energetic and always had a smile on his face.
Police are looking for the shooter.
