Sticky goo on highway damaged nearly 500 cars

PITTSBURGH - Authorities say 464 motorists have reported damage from last week's 40-mile driveway-sealant spill on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

A leaking valve on a tanker spread the gooey substance over the eastbound lanes of the turnpike in western Pennsylvania.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports Tuesday that the number of damaged cars may be even higher, since some complaints may have gone directly to insurance companies. Some vehicles had to be towed because of the sticky substance. Authorities are still investigating.

The sticky goo covered tires and wheels and disabled many cars. Some maintenance vehicles had to be towed away after getting stuck in the tar-like substance. The road was not shut down because the spill was mostly confined to one side of the road, and the substance hardened in about 15 minutes. Still, many questioned if it was worth keeping the Turnpike open since the driveway sealant caused so much damage.
