Slain California Boy Buried
The funeral of Matthew Cecchi drew 600 mourners in the Butte County city of Oroville on Tuesday.
The 9-year-old boy was killed last week in a public restroom during a family camping trip near San Diego.
John Lobertini of CBS affiliate KOVR-TV in Sacramento reports that Matthew's parents and other relatives, weeping through the service, were joined by his elementary-school classmates and members of his baseball team, all of them carrying flowers.
"Matthew's nine years of life have touched the hearts of young and old alike," said the Rev. Troy Powers, pastor of St. Thomas Church.
The boy was described by friends and relatives as popular, smart, and happy. Mourners included those who knew him well and those who had never met him.
Meanwhile, Judge Timothy Casserly ordered a psychological evaluation for Brandon Wilson, 20, the Wisconsin drifter accused of killing the boy, to determine whether he was competent to stand trial.
Wilson was calm as the judge read the order. Last week, during an outburst in court, Wilson admitted to killing Cecchi inside a restroom at Oceanside Harbor on Nov. 14. Just minutes before the outburst, his lawyer had entered a not guilty plea.
Wilson was arrested in connection with another stabbing elsewhere in California. He remains jailed without bail, charged with murder.
The brutal death of Matthew Cecchi captured the nation's attention. The youth's throat was slashed while unsuspecting relatives waited for him outside the door of the restroom.
Wilson, of St. Croix Falls, Wis., has drifted among several states in the West over the past two years.
