Sister: I told cops of Patz confession in 1980s

(CBS/AP) CAMDEN, N.J. - The sister of a man who confessed last week to the 1979 killing of Etan Patz in New York now says she told police in the 1980s that her brother had killed a little boy.

Norma Hernandez told The Star-Ledger that she did not have details or evidence about the killing and did not know the alleged victim's name. But she said she told Camden police in the 1980s that her brother had spoken of taking a child's life.

She says they did nothing at the time.

Hernandez told the Star Ledger she never confronted her brother directly about his confession. Describing him as "a loner," she said he was like a stranger to his four brothers and seven sisters, who grew up in Camden.

Pedro Hernandez now faces second-degree murder charges, after confessing last week to the death of 6-year-old Patz.

Norma Hernandez previously told The Associated Press that she would have turned her brother in if she'd had more information.

Camden Police Chief Scott Thomson told the Star-Ledger that he had not heard her claims that she had reported her brother.
