Simmons Is Still Hungry

If there's anyone in America who hasn't heard of Richard Simmons, it certainly isn't his fault.

Over the past 25 years, he has written seven books, starred in 26 exercise videos, made hundreds of talk show appearances, and found the time to do a stint on General Hospital.

He shares with CBS News This Morning some details of his new book Still Hungry - After All These Years, a tell-all autobiography that puts his whole life in perspective.

Simmon's book focuses on his family and childhood and all the crazy ways he tried to lose weight like protein diets, laxatives or diet pills. He describes his long-time relationship with food as well as his mother's cravings.

"I just lost my mother. This is about family," Simmons says about his book.

He adds: "This is about how I get started, selling pralines on the corner and all the terrible things I tried to lose weight, throwing up, diet pill, diet shots. And that was in the '50s."

He wrote this book because he is seeing the same diet fads reappear again today, he says.

"Here in 1999 so many people are doing the same thing. It's like Groundhog Day," adds Simmons.

His purpose is to let people know that things can get better. He gives three steps to follow:

  • Give yourself three compliments every morning.
  • Plan your meals for the day.
  • Move. You can start with a walk to the mailbox or a long stretch.
Simmons has also a new syndicated TV show called Dreammaker. When it comes to his dreams, he has many, he says. Among them, he wants to exercise with Tipper Gore, have lunch with Janet Reno, end illiteracy and get physical education back in the schools.
