Shorts suit: A chic office look for summer
(CBS) - When temperatures reach record highs, like here in New York this week, picking out an appropriate and stylish ensemble for the office can be quite a task.
Fortunately for women, there is a new approach to workwear for warm weather that is not only polished, but practical: The shorts suit.
Like those seen on the designer runways, shorts are a nice switch to suiting when the length is right and they're paired with the proper pieces, like a tailored blazer and a crisp button-down.
"Shorts can really replace a skirt - they're actually easier to move in," Colleen Sherin, a senior fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue, tells the Associated Press. "What's the difference between shorts and a skirt - even if they're the same length? It's that shorts are perceived as casual by nature, something that children wear, something we wear on weekends. That perception is changing."
The trend has popped up in many of the spring-summer collections, like at Bottega Venetta and Tommy Hilfiger, and also has shown up in the resort collections being previewed this month.
Designer Jason Wu, whose first claim to fame was creating Michelle Obama's white Inauguration ball gown, offers a few jacket-and-shorts combinations in his resort 2011 collection, including one with a tuxedo feel.
And at Jenni Kayne, a gray, short-sleeved jacket tops a tailored pair and a pale lavender button-down shirt, providing a light weight take on the look.
