Shooting at scene of Chicago bus crash that injured 11
(CBS/WBBM) CHICAGO - Eleven people were hurt Tuesday morning in an accident involving a Chicago Transit Authority bus on the city's South Side. Shots were also fired at the scene, but no one was wounded by gunfire.
Chicago police confirmed a CT bus was involved in a crash at around 9:30 a.m. Police also said that shots were fired at the same location, but no one was hit by gunfire, reports CBS station WBBM.
According to preliminary reports, another vehicle struck the CTA bus, which then hit a light pole, CTA spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis said. The bus driver and five passengers were injured, but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, she said.
One witness, Mark, who works in a currency exchange near the crash location, said that a small black car with two people inside came careening around the corner.
"I saw a black, small, two-passenger vehicle car come whipping around the corner from the north, traveling southbound on Vincennes, and it was clearly trying to get away from the gunshots," he said.
The car ran a red light plowed into the bus, pushing it across the intersection into a vacant lot, reports WBBM.
"It hit the CTA bus so hard, it sent him clear across the intersection, knocking over a light pole, and sent the CTA bus into a vacant lot, stopping on the other end of a vacant lot," Mark said.
Fire officials said the 11 people were taken to hospitals, while three more refused medical treatment. Their conditions ranged from good to serious.
None of the injuries was life-threatening, fire officials said.
No one was in custody for the shooting.
