Twenty years ago, pediatric sleep expert Richard Ferber wrote a book called "Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems." His philosophy, often referred to as "Ferberizing," calls for a variety of strategies, including letting your baby cry for a set period of time before you comfort her.
The method has stirred up a lot of talk among parents, pediatricians, and sleep experts alike. Some think of Ferber as a godsend, while others say his approach makes babies and parents suffer.

Now, Ferber is releasing a new edition of his book this spring in which he backs off his controversial system for training babies to sleep.
Ferber now says that letting children cry "was not meant to be the way to treat all problems," and in his updated book, he will make it clear that he offers other solutions besides crying.
