Second Cup Cafe: Katharine McPhee
Four years ago, "McPheever" spread across America, when Katharine McPhee became an "American Idol" favorite.
Since her "Idol" days, she's had a Top 10 album and landed a co-starring role in the 2008 movie, "The House Bunny," as well as making appearances on the hit TV shows, "CSI: New York" and "Ugly Betty."
Her brand new album, "Unbroken," hit shelves this week and she stopped by "The Early Show Saturday Edition"'s "Second Cup Cafe" to perform her first single off the album, "Had It All," as well as "Keep Drivin'."
As the runner-up to country crooner Taylor Hicks, McPhee proved she could tackle any genre that came her way. She captured audiences with her moving rendition of "Over the Rainbow."
McPhee has been surrounded by music all her life. Her mom, also a singer, has several musical facets. As a cabaret singer, she has the sass and talent and, as a voice teacher, she has the discipline.
"I grew up with the Great American Songbook," says McPhee on her Web site. "That's why I know all the standards, but I always had a want and a need for pop music."
Her first solo album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 in early 2007. Her first single, "Over the Rainbow"/"My Destiny," debuted at No. 2 Hot Singles Sales Charts.
Along with the revitalization of her career, McPhee has undergone a dramatic physical transformation - she recently went from being a long, dark-haired brunette to a short-haired, platinum blonde.
This time around, McPhee took the lyrical reins in "Unbroken." She co-wrote most of the songs and collaborated with fellow singer/songwriters Paula Cole, Ingrid Michaelson and Rachael Yamagata.
McPhee also has a lead role in the upcoming feature film, "You May Not Kiss the Bride."
She is married to Nick Cokas, whom she was dating also while she competed on "American Idol."
