Second Cup Cafe: Cast of the Musical "Memphis"

The Tony Award-winning muscial "Memphis" is an original story of a young white DJ in the 1950s who fell in love with everything he shouldn't -- rock 'n' roll and an electrifying black singer.

It's been almost a year since its opening night on Broadway, and it's already won four Tonys -- including best musical!

The cast of "Memphis," including Tony nominees Chad Kimball and Montego Glover, stopped by our plaza for "The Early Show on Saturday Morning"'s "Second Cup Cafe" to perform "Steal Your Rock & Roll" and "Someday."

The show is stealing the hearts of many theater-goers.

How does "Memphis" portray the breaking of racial barriers in the '50s?

It tells the story of Huey Calhoun (played by Chad Kimball), a white radio DJ whose love of good music transcends racial lines and airwaves, and Felicia Farrell (played by Montego Glover), an African-American singer. "Memphis" evolved into a love story with a twist, as Huey falls for Felicia despite the racial taboos of the segregated times.

The backdrop sizzles with the smoky and sultry halls and underground clubs where love, culture and music were forever changed.

Written by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan, his experience, strong stage presence as well as an incredible storyline make for a perfect theatrical combo that lights Broadway and ignites discussion.

There is no shortage of appreciation for "Memphis" by critics and fans, alike.

Its 2010 Tonys were for Best Musical, Best Original Score (Bon Jovi's David Bryan and Joe DiPietro), Best Book (Joe DiPietro) and Best Orchestrations (David Bryan and Daryl Waters).

It also won four Drama Desk Awards (including Best Musical) and four Outer Critics Circle Awards (including Best Musical).

"Memphis" opened on Broadway on October 19 of last year. It will be embarking on a national tour, kicking off in none other than Memphis, itself, in October 2011.

"Memphis" is currently playing on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre.
