Schieffer: Heads May Yet Roll over Christmas Attack

Bob Schieffer is CBS News' chief Washington correspondent and anchor of "Face the Nation." He spoke with Katie Couric on the "CBS Evening News" Tuesday about a possible government shakeup following the errors that led to attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas.

Couric: As Chip [Reid] just mentioned, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said today the president has full confidence in his national security officials, but you're hearing otherwise?

Schieffer: Well, I tell you, Katie, they may not be ready to officially confirm it at the White House, but when the president said today that we had the information to prevent this, but it was not properly analyzed, that means there are going to be some changes made.

We're hearing at least two top officials may be leaving before this is over – maybe more. The president, you remember, has come under withering criticism that he didn't even understand how serious all this was.

On Christmas day, the government was trying to minimize all this, was telling us it was safe to fly. Today you saw the president come full circle, said he got lucky, we got lucky on this one, and that he not only wasn't afraid to show his anger, he seemed to want people to see it today, Katie.

I think, Katie, there is a major shakeup coming.
