Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn split

(CBS) It's over between Sean Penn and Scarlett Johansson.

The actor, 50, and actress, 26, are no longer dating, a source told People magazine on Friday.

Rumors about their relationship began when Johansson did not accompany Penn to the Cannes Film Festival, where he was promoting his film "The Tree of Life." According to People's report, Johansson has been in New Mexico working on "The Avengers," in which she plays Black Widow.

Penn and Johansson first made headlines in March when they were spotted vacationing together in Mexico.  They reportedly attended Reese Witherspoon's wedding together later that month and were seen hand-in-hand outside a White House Correspondents' Dinner after-party in Washington on May 2.

Johansson split from her husband, actor Ryan Reynolds, after two years of marriage last December.
