Sarah Palin's son weds high school sweetheart

(CBS/AP) ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Sarah Palin has a new role: Mother-in-law.

People magazine is reporting that the former Alaska governor's 22 year-old son, Track, has married his high school sweetheart, 21-year-old Britta Hanson.

The magazine says the wedding took place in a small ceremony in Hatcher Pass, not far from the Palins' hometown of Wasilla. The newlyweds are planning a larger wedding celebration at Alyeska Ski Resort, south of Anchorage, next winter, when family and friends from out of state can travel north.

The former vice presidential candidiate and Tea Party darling confirmed the wedding on Twitter, retweeting word from her political action committee that her son had gotten married and adding, "Yes, they did & we couldn't be any more blessed!"

Palin attorney John Tiemessen also confirmed details reported in the magazine.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Hanson and Palin families issued a joint statement saying: "These are two hard working, humble, active, studious young adults who grew up together. We're tickled that after two decades of friendship we proudly witnessed their marriage, knowing their new life together will be blessed."

Track Palin is an Army reservist. He spent a year deployed in Iraq with the Army. After the commercial fishing season, he plans to take courses at the University of Alaska.

Hanson is a University of Alaska nursing student.
