Sarah Jones: Taking Broadway By Storm

Sarah Jones might not be a household name, but judging by her success on Broadway, it's only a matter of time.

Jones is a multi-talented playwright and performer, currently appearing in her one-woman show, "Bridge and Tunnel." The production has been such a hit, its limited run has been extended into July.

Jones, 32, visited The Early Show to talk about "Bridge and Tunnel" and about finding inspiration in the world around her.

Throughout the interview, Jones amused co-anchor Harry Smith by slipping into the different characters she assumes on stage, from an octogenarian to a rapper to a thickly accented man by the name of Mohammed Ali.

"Bridge and Tunnel" is about a poetry reading and includes 14 different characters, each and every one of them acted by Jones herself. She said she conceived the idea with the help of her husband, Steve.

"We did come up with this idea for the show because we both started out in these performance venues just reading our own writing allowed in competitions," Jones told Smith. "And we met so many people from so many different backgrounds. To us, this isn't outlandish at all."

As for all the different characters, Jones found all the inspiration she needed in New York City's borough of Queens.

"It's the most diverse county in the world," she said. "Can you believe that? Right there in Queens."

For Jones, a subway ride or a walk on the street can lead to a whole new source of inspiration. "I don't want people to start running from me when they see me on the street," she said. "But I do listen. I can't help it."

And bringing these characters, with their unique identities, onto the stage brings home a message that resonates for all audiences.

"I almost feel like I am living my American dream vicariously through these other people's version," Jones told Smith. "Each of their individual versions about the American dream, that struggle to achieve it. These are tough economic times we live in. They're tough for everybody, especially if you are an immigrant."
