(CBS/KCBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - Salvador Acevedo shot and killed his girlfriend and their 5-year-old twins before turning the gun on himself, in a murder-suicide inside an SUV that was witnessed by three other children, Los Angeles authorities said Sunday.

The shootings occurred Saturday night in a residential area of east Los Angeles, officials say, reports CBS affiliate KCBS.

Acevedo, 45, was driving an SUV carrying his girlfriend Iris Oseguera, 33, the couples' fraternal twins and three teenagers, when he began fighting with Oseugera. Officials say it was during the dispute when Acevedo pulled out a handgun and shot Oseguera and the twins. The victims were all shot in the upper torso area, reports the station.

The three teens who witnessed the shooting were not harmed, according to officials. After the murders, Acevedo dropped the teens off with a relative, who then called authorities. Deputies located Acevedo's vehicle and saw that he was suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Acevedo and Oseguera were declared dead at the scene. The boy and girl were declared dead at County-USC Medical Center, according to sheriff's officials.

Sheriff's detectives have not disclosed the relationship between Acevedo and the three teenagers.
