Police: Teen cancer patient shot dead outside Texas home

DUNCANVILLE, Texas -- A teenage cancer patient was shot in front of his North Texas home on Saturday and police are now asking for the public's help in searching for his killer, CBS Dallas-Fort Worth reported.

Police say Ryan Lara, 15, was shot during an attempted robbery. He had been in front of his home in Duncanville around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday while moving his family's car to the driveway.

Family members told CBS DFW that the suspect's vehicle was possibly a gray or silver 4-door compact sedan. One of Lara's family members reportedly fired his own gun at the suspect's car, but police couldn't tell if anyone was hit.

After the shootout, Lara had been taken to a local hospital in Dallas County where he later died of his wounds.

The victim had also been suffering from lymphoma, according to the station. His health was reportedly showing signs of improvement after receiving chemotherapy treatments twice a week.

"He showed a lot of progress and he was actually doing very well," his older brother told CBS DFW. "He was real strong. acting like he didn't even have cancer."

North Texas Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of anyone involved and can be reached at 1-877-373-8477, according to the station.
