Romney Praises Bush On Iraq

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

TAMPA, FLA. -- On the morning of the critical Florida primary, Mitt Romney applauded President Bush's remarks on Iraq during last night's State of the Union address.

"I thought it was very impressive," Romney said to a crowd of about 150 at a rally in Tampa. "This is a person who's no longer looking for a political career. He's only thinking about what's right for the country — what's right for America."

Romney's main rival in Florida, John McCain, has accused the former Massachusetts governor of taking positions for political expediency. Romney has leveled similar charges against McCain, and today he praised the president for taking a stand based on principle.

"And as [President Bush] laid out his plans and what he wants Congress to do, he was speaking from the heart," Romney said. "There's no politics in what he was saying last night. He was talking about what he honestly believes is right for America."

McCain has repeatedly accused the former Massachusetts governor of once having favored a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal, a charge that has been deemed unfair by several media fact checks and one that Romney emphatically denies.

"We will win in Iraq and keep Iraq from becoming a safe haven for al Qaeda and terror," Romney said.
