Arrests in Florida teen's slaying after autopsy determines cause of death

WINTER PARK, Fla. --  Authorities say three teens have been charged in the October death of another teen in an upscale Orlando-area suburb after an autopsy determined the victim died of blunt-force trauma, reports CBS affiliate WKMG.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that two 15-year-old boys are facing manslaughter and battery charges, and a 14-year-old boy has been charged with tampering with a witness.

Winter Park Police Lt. Pam Marcum says 15-year-old Roger Trindade, who was reportedly a transfer student from Brazil  got into a confrontation with the other boys on Oct. 15. He was found unconscious in a popular Winter Park shopping and dining area and was brain-dead by the time he arrived at a hospital.

He was taken off life support two days later.

Marcum says investigators have known who was involved in the fight but were waiting for the medical examiner to confirm the cause of death before making an arrest.

Police haven’t released details about what led to the confrontation. CBS News is not identifying the teens involved because they are charged as juveniles.

Trinidade’s mother, who lives in Brazil, wrote on Facebook that the teen told her he loved her the last time they spoke, reports CBS affiliate WKMG.

“Every day, I suffer from a lack of that boy that illuminated my life. My son was murdered by these boys,” the woman wrote. “I’m going to pay a very high price every day of my life for not having my son with me. My penalty cannot be bigger than theirs.”
